• In searching for mental health services, you can consult the MHReferral.com directory to get an idea of the number of providers in your area available to take on new patients. You may want to consult with your insurance or managed-care company for a list of preferred provider under your health plan. Often, you may need to receive a referral from your primary care provider before your insurance plan would authorize for mental health care.

• There may be situations in which you can appeal to your insurance or managed-care organization for authorization to see a provider outside of your plan's preferred provider list. At times, this may be necessary because your insurance or managed-care organization does not have adequate numbers of preferred providers in your vicinity. Contact the customer service department of your insurance or managed-care organization for additional information.

• The main focus of this directory is to help you search for mental health services. As such, we have provided a method in which you can determine how quickly you can access care in your particular area. We have asked our participating providers to indicate their availability to new patients/clients. They can indicate that they are available for urgent next day appointments and/or available within one week. They can also indicate that they are open to receiving new patients but access may be a few weeks to a few months. In other words, providers can inform you of how soon you can get an appointment.

• This directory also separates the providers by the age groups of patients that they serve. Some specialize in working with children and adolescents while others may specialize in working with adults. Some providers specialize in working mostly with the geriatric population.
